I know there’s that cheesy song by Chris de Burgh about the lady in red! However, in my opinion, you still have to go a long way to beat red dresses for wow factor.  The first evening dress I ever owned was red. I wore it to an awards ceremony.  And I will never forget how gorgeous I felt in it.  The awards photographer also took so many photos of me, explaining that red is such a great colour when it comes to newspaper print. For me, it also felt wonderful to stand out in a sea of black dresses and black dinner suits.

If you believe in colour analysis, and I do, everyone can wear red. You just have to find the right shade of red for you. And there are so many shades to choose from. Pillar box red, poppy red, rust red. You name it, there is a tone of red to complement all hair colours and skin tones. Famous fashionista Audrey Hepburn was a great believer in red and is quoted as saying “there is a shade of red for every woman.”

For the autumn season, there are lots of great cocktail dresses and evening dresses coming through in red.

Red dresses – how to make a colour statement

When it comes to red dresses – you need to let the dress do the talking. The colour red has such impact that you often don’t need much bling or detail on the dress. Think sexy low-back red dresses by designers such as Pia Michi. Red dresses also look amazing set off with some diamante detail. Easy-to-wear designer Frank Lyman does a great choice in a red jersey with just a touch of silver bling. The silver really comes alive against the red.

Add strong red lipstick to match your dress and you are ready to step onto the red carpet.

But don’t just take mine and Audrey’s word for it. Listen to Bill Blass, American fashion designer and seven-time winner of The Coty American Fashion Critics’ Awards top tip “When in doubt, always wear red.”
