Did you know a frock coat actually started out as a man’s coat? It was popular in the Victorian and Edwardian period.  For a long time, a frock coat for weddings and special occasions was the obvious choice. Then it fell out of fashion. The look became frumpy  – think of some of the Queen’s fashion faux pas in the past! Ladies would come in to my shop and say ‘please don’t make me look like the Queen!”

But now frock coats are back in vogue largely thanks to another Royal – the Duchess of Cambridge. She has revitalised the look and proved you can look formal and fashionable.

If you are looking for a frock coat, there are some fabulous styles around now. Take a look at designers such as John Charles who have a stunning organza coat and dress in navy and silver. Another great occasionwear designer, Michaela Louisa , is doing a fabulous lace frock coat and dress combination in peach for under £300. This is beautifully vintage with a trendy twist.  Our newest Spanish designer Rosa Clara also has a fabulous frock coat combo – in navy chiffon trimmed with white it is just so classic and sophisticated.

Frock coat renaissance

The frock coat of today is much trendier and there are some fabulous light fabrics being used. Think chiffon, organza and lace. This means they are less stiff and starchy.

The great thing about frock coats  is that if it is cut correctly, they can make you look taller and slimmer. Clever panelling and waterfall shaping of lapels really help if you want to elongate your silhouette. Contrary to popular belief, a frock coat can look fab on a shorter lady. It is all about getting the proportions right.

The other great benefit is that lightweight frock coats also cover your arms without being restrictive though many dresses that come with frock coats also have sleeves should you want to take the coat off.

Remember too, a  frock coat doesn’t just have to be worn on a special day. Team it with other dresses. Why not wear it with trousers to smarten up a look? I’ve even teamed mine with jeans for a smart/casual outfit.
