Frock coats used to always be the failsafe choice for older ladies going to posh events. Think Queen Mum and our present Queen. However, if you take a look at younger royalty like the Duchess of Cambridge, you will see she also quite often opts for frock coat styles. And thanks to her, frock coats are back in vogue. The good news is, this look is being reinvented to be fashionable as well as formal.
Frock coats – choosing your look
You will see that many frock coats are shaped to flatter the figure. They have nipped in waists and gorgeous panelling so they fall elegantly. The more traditional look of a structured coat with lapels and a shift dress underneath is revamped for 21st century women. Take a look at Veni Infantino’s stunning range of dresses and frock coats – this is proving to be one of our bestselling looks. They seem to have combined a classic look with a modern twist which really works.
Swing coats are also coming though for this season. One of the best I have seen is by Dressed Up. Aimed at the fuller-figure, this silver swing coat is a stunning look with vintage glamour.
Carla Ruiz, a very on-trend Spanish label is also doing a younger version of frock coats ideal for wedding guests and Ascot goers. As well as fashionable, these frock coats with their neat dresses underneath are also a reasonable price with a dress and coat at £285 to £365.
If your special occasion is in summer, frock coats are still an option. If you want to stay cool but still covered, go for lace frock coats or chiffon styles. Spnaish designer Couture Club are doing some gorgeous floaty chiffon coats ideal for hot weather events with lovely lace dresses underneath.
Frock coats – on and off
Like with any outfit, the key is the proportions. A well shaped frock coat can actually make you look taller and thinner.
If you are smaller in height, this look can still work for you. You will find a plainer print or one colour will work better as you may find a busy pattern overpowering. Look out for clean and well cut lines in your choices.
And remember the coat isn’t everything. The dress underneath must also have wow factor as you are unlikely to keep the coat on all day. And once the big day is over, team up your frock coat with other items in your wardrobe. They work so well with jeans or trousers for a smart/casual look. And if you opt for a chiffon frock coats, try wearing over other dresses or teamed with trousers and a top.
