Wedding outfits by Carla Ruiz style 93782
Wedding outfits like this black and white striped style from Spanish designer Carla Ruiz make an eye-catching statement

Black and white wedding outfits always attract a huge amount of attention when we advertise them in our mother of the bride collections. Women come in, try them on and love them. But then the doubts creep in. Can I wear an outfit with black in to my daughter’s wedding? Is that appropriate?

I guess this concern comes from the fact we associate black with more sombre occasions such as funerals. And yet at the other extreme of life, we also tune into this colour for celebrations like parties and formal dinners. At events like this, you can’t get away from little black dresses. Cruise ship holidays always arrange black and white themed nights.  Here in Bournemouth we have an annual Black Ball that has been running for over 10 years. So black is in vogue. And teamed with white – it is even better.

Black and white wedding outfits – why they work

They will not clash with any of the other members of the wedding party. Black and white are such neutral colours.

Black and white wedding outfits work any time of year. They look fresh in spring/summer. They look bold and bright in the depths of winter.

A great wedding photographer friend of mine Angela Vincent who has photographed too many weddings to mention always reminds me that women don’t tend to stand next to the bride for many photos. The male members of the party are normally placed near her.  This helps to break up the colours that the women are wearing.

She also reckons that black and white outfits photograph really well too.

For mums who have the honour of taking their daughter down the aisle, a black and white or black and ivory wedding outfit can complement a wedding dress beautifully. There is no distraction of a bright colour. Just a very sophisticated and elegant look.

The other reason why black and white as a colour combination comes round season after season and takes centre stage on our catwalks is that it is timeless. It manages to still look modern and yet will never date. An important factor when you look back at wedding photographs many years later.

“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.” Coco Chanel
